This is a 1945 photo of Queens CORE member Elayne Jones (piano, playing) with Duke Ellington (piano, standing).
Born and raised in Harlem, she won the prestigious Ellington Scholarship while attending the Juilliard School of Music.
A noted percussionist and timpanist, in 1949 she became the first Black musician to play with the New York City Opera and Ballet. In 1962, she became the timpanist for the American Symphony Orchestra founded by the acclaimed maestro Leopold Stokowski.
She was also the wife of Queens CORE chairman Dr. George Kaufman.
